Chapter Seventeen

The day dawned cold, cloudy and drizzly. Irritated and out of sorts since her failure to suddenly become a swimmer now that she’d decided to do it, Fran was restless. She’d been in Llanbryn for a fortnight now and, to her constant surprise, had settled into a pleasant routine. She walked twice, often three times a day, further and faster each time. She’d joined classes and met people. But there were no classes that day. Fran was enjoying them, even if her skills at sewing harked back to secondary school, which was the last time she’d attempted anything similar.

The textile class definitely appealed to her. More art-based, they didn’t rely on her producing something wearable, and seemed to free her brain. She was noticing more these days. Shapes of wildflowers, how the leaves grew, colours. Her fingers twitched for a paintbrush, a mark maker of some sort. Art. Trawling the village Facebook hub in search of a distraction, she found it in the shape of the Art Hotel.

Curious, she clicked onto the website, delighted to see some really good examples of contemporary art. Situated on the Gower coast, and recently renovated from crumbling gentility to incorporate what had been the renowned Art Café, which had been destroyed by a huge storm, the whole place looked stylish and amazing. She caught herself thinking guiltily: not at all what she’d originally expected of Wales.

It was exactly right for a trip out. She could go that morning. The knock on the door sounded as she was saving the details into her phone.

‘Hello, Elin. Come in — coffee?’

‘Thank you, lovely, but don’t let me stop you doing something.’ She stared pointedly at the phone in Fran’s hand.

‘Oh, you weren’t — I was looking at the Art Hotel. Do you know it?’

‘I haven’t been since it was the Art Café. I’ve always wanted to go and somehow I never did.’

Fran’s words tumbled out in a rush. ‘Would you like to come with me, today? It takes less than an hour, according to Google Maps, so we could have lunch and a look round . . .’ She stopped her headlong word assault. ‘Sorry, you probably have plans, you’re always so busy. Ignore me.’

‘Not at all, and that fits in very nicely with something I’ve just applied for, as it happens.’ Elin headed for the front door. ‘I’ll fetch my jacket and bag and see you back here in twenty minutes?’

‘Lovely,’ Fran said, tugging her fingers through her hair and already mentally changing her clothes. ‘See you in a bit.’ Halfway to closing the door, she called to Elin, ‘Sorry, Elin, what was it you wanted?’

‘I’ll tell you on the way!’ Elin bustled away into her cottage. She returned wearing a cornflower-blue cowl neck tunic over a pair of dark-wash jeans, topped off with a loosely draped patterned scarf.

‘You look lovely!’ Fran told her, taking in the carefully put-together details of the older woman’s smart but casual outfit, right down to the tan ankle boots and coordinating bag.
